Analysing Advertisements

The advertisement above is from the magazine Elle for Katy Perry's fragrance 'Purr.' Elle is a fashion magazine targeted towards mainly young women, meaning Katy Perry wants her perfume to be sold to that specific audience. As Elle is also a high end magazine, the fact that the advertisement is shown in it will make women believe it is a good, popular and respected product. Also, the colours used within the ad catch the targeted audiences eyes: pink and purple are associated with females, meaning this particular advertisement will appeal to them. Along with the colour, the font is used in a similar way: it appeals to women because it is slightly swirly rather than block like, which would appeal to men. However, apart from these things, we can clearly see the perfume is made for women as it states it is 'The New Fragrance for Women.'

Katy is posing in a sexual way, which suggests she is being sexualised by the media. As she is percieved in a sexual way, it means that more people will want to buy the product, look at the advertisment and it will draw the attention of men as they will want to buy it for their girlfriend/wife etc which will equate to more sales. Katy is also a very famous and respected popstar and in this modern age most people want the expensive and branded products in order for them to gain more respect and popularity, therefore more girls will buy Katy's product.

The slogan at the bottom of the ad reads 'Earn My Affection.' This is attempting to get the message across that wearing this perfume will maybe draw more attention to you because you will smell nice or simply because it's a famous product, suggesting more women will want to purchase the fragrance as they believe they may earn more attention from men and from women.

Overall, this shows how advertisements can sell their products using certain tactics like use of colour, font, image, slogan and even where they place their advertisement.
